What we offer: 1. Sail and power boat instruction: Whether you just purchased your first boat or have moved up to a new to you boat, our professional Captains have years of experience providing instruction in the skills you need to comfortably go wherever it is you want to go. Instruction can be tailored to your want, needs, and desires. From coastal navigation to docking and rules of the road, this hands-on instruction will give you the confidence you need to enjoy your boat. Our in-depth training, which covers safety, pre-operational checks, basic maintenance, boat-handling, and navigation may satisfy your insurance company’s requirement for captain training. 2. Marine consultation: Our team can help you answer the questions you have about your next adventure. Whether provisioning, preventive maintenance, navigation, route planning, safety topics, or crew dynamics and leadership. As with our instruction offerings, consultation services can be tailored to your needs. Our Captains have planned voyages throughout the Chesapeake Bay, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia, and the Pacific. 3. Boat and yacht delivery: Specializing in delivery around the Chesapeake Bay, our Captains can safely deliver your boat to its new home. We also offer local boat move services such as sea trials or delivery to the maintenance slip/travel lift from your home slip.

Scott Titus

President

Scott Titus spent 20 years as a marine engineer in the US Army. He served on boats ranging from 128ft ocean going tugboats, 174ft landing craft, 273ft landing craft and a 300ft heavy-lift cargo ship in all engine room positions from wiper to chief engineer. Scott’s Army mariner career included nine trans-Atlantic crossings, a trip through the Panama Canal and up the west coast to Tacoma, Washington, a trip across the equator Dubai to Kenya, and many trips to and around the Caribbean. Scott formerly taught basic and advanced shipboard firefighting, engine room resource management, damage control, and many other classes for the US Army Transportation School. Scott’s sailing experience includes coastal cruising and racing boats ranging from 15ft Albacore dinghies to a 44ft center cockpit ketch. Currently, Scott and his wife sail their 1967 Alberg 30 out of the Mobjack Bay off the lower Chesapeake Bay.

Joe Morgan

Captain

Joe Morgan has been sailing for over 50 years.  He has cruised the Chesapeake Bay extensively as well as the ICW from Jacksonville, FL to the northern Chesapeake Bay area.   He has taught sailing for both juniors and adults for many years and currently owns Catalina 36 “Hollye Day” as well as an Albacore and Hampton One Design.   He has raced dinghy boats throughout his life.  Additionally, he has served as Commodore and Fleet Captain for Ware River Yacht Club in Ware Neck, Virginia.

Tim Turner

Captain

Still on or near the water after four decades, Tim found his passion for the sea as a teenager. Tim’s career on the water began working the deck of tour boats, commercial fishing/ research vessels and pilot boats in the pristine waters of Prince William Sound Alaska. Deciding to find warmer waters, Tim joined the Service. Over a 32-year career as an Army Mariner Tim’s served aboard a variety of tugs, landing craft, and high-speed catamarans working his way up the hawse-pipe culminating as Master a multitude of Army Vessels of the Army’s largest ocean-going vessels in the Caribbean, Tasman, China, and Philippine Sea, Atlantic, Pacific, Indian Ocean, and Persian Gulf.   

Tim’s passion for the water and concern for the future of the sea drove him toward his current position as Director of Marine Operation (DMO), Virginia Institute of Marine Science. Tim oversees the operations, maintenance, and training for a fleet of 28 research vessels ranging from 18’ to 93’ and their crews. Tim holds a MMC as a 200T Master, Near Coastal with the following endorsements: ARPA, ECDIS, GMDSS, Firefighting, Survival/Rescue craft, Vessel Security Officer.

Jim Garrett

Captain

Jim is an experienced sailor with over 50 years of hands-on expertise in boat handling, navigation, and seamanship aboard both monohull and catamaran sailboats. Proven capability in coastal cruising, offshore passages, and competitive racing, with extensive experience on the Chesapeake Bay, Gulf Coast, California coast, and Caribbean. He retired in 2022 after 40 years in the Industrial and Construction Leasing Industry, then completed maritime training to become a Marine Surveyor. Currently principal owner of Garrett Marine Surveys, LLC, providing C&V insurance and pre-purchase surveys, marine systems, propulsion and rigging consultation, damage inspections, and training.

Bill Slusher

Captain

Captain Bill holds a MMC as 200T Master, Near Coastal with the following endorsements: assistance towing, unlimited radar, ARPA, ECDIS and firefighting. Bill spent 25 years operating Army Watercraft as a master on landing craft ranging from 75ft LCMs, 174ft LCUs, and 273ft LSV. Bill served as master of US Army Small Tugs. He was also the Chief Mate on the 300ft Theater Support Vessel, an ocean-going high-speed catamaran. Bill’s last 8.5 years have been with the US Maritime Administration as Tug Master on 25’ push boat, 40’ push boat, 60’ and 86” harbor tugs. Bill has also served as marine surveyor/port engineer, and Pilot.

Will Schrade

Captain

Captain William (Will) Schrade retired from the United States Coast Guard as a Commander (O5) with 23-years of service.  He served as the Chief of the Port Operations School at U.S. Coast Guard Training Center Yorktown, where he taught domestic and international courses.  His experience on larger boats includes Boat Crew Member of 47’ Motor Lifeboats in the Coast Guard and several deliveries of various sail boats up and down the east coast from the Carolinas to Cape Cod.  He also was part of a crew aboard a 40’ Island Packet sailing from Norfolk, VA to Bermuda using celestial navigation to make the passage.  Will holds a U.S. Coast Guard 50-Ton Masters License with Aux-Sail and Towing endorsements, and is the proud owner of a Bristol 38.8 Masthead Sloop. He has loved the sea since he was young, growing up in the beach town of Plymouth, MA.  His fondest memories include plaining a laser for the first time and hiking out on the trapeze of his Hobie 16.  Will lives in Yorktown, VA with his family, and is proud to volunteer as a Captain for Sail Beyond Cancer out of Gloucester, VA.

Kevin Gormley

Captain

Kevin Gormley is a dedicated maritime professional with 23 years of experience as a licensed captain in the maritime industry. He holds a U.S. Coast Guard License as Master of 200-ton Near Coastal, along with a comprehensive set of endorsements and credentials, including Radar Observer Unlimited, Proficiency in Survival Craft, Able Seaman Unlimited, and Basic Training which includes basic firefighting, water survival, first aid, and CPR, among others. His experience as a captain includes running vessels up to 175 feet including offshore supply vessels, tugs, launches, and survey vessels. He is currently the captain of a 62 ft high speed survey and debris vessel for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Kevin’s competencies extend to basic vessel repair, preventative maintenance, mechanical troubleshooting, vessel maneuvering, line handling and splicing, navigation and plotting, and the operation of navigational equipment. He is also a TWIC card holder, FCC Marine Radio Operators Permit holder, and CPR/AED certified.

Kevin also has 25 years of sailing experience which has included captaining a Stiletto catamaran for charter, transporting vessels, and participating in annual regattas for both cruising and one-design class boats. Kevin also enjoys spending time with his wife and two young sons exploring coastal Virginia by both land and water.

His professional and personal journey reflects a passion for the maritime industry and a commitment to ensuring the safety and efficiency of maritime operations.
